How to Prevent Spyware from Destroying your Computer

Spyware is software that runs behind the scenes on your computer and collects information about your keystrokes, the sites you visit, and any other information that you would want to keep private. Spyware gets installed on your computer without you even knowing about it. But a first warning sign that you have it on your computer is when performance begins to deteriorate rapidly and you find a lot of strange processes that you know nothing about. While there are tools to remove spyware, the best situation is that it never resides on our computer in the first place. Here are some tips to keeping spyware from destroying your computer. First of all, you need to be vigilant in avoiding clicks on sites or links that you know nothing about - especially if these links come from popup ads. You should not click on a popup or spam advertisement link because you don't want to risk that click installing spyware on your computer.

The first step to preventing spyware on your computer is to make sure your computer is clean from spyware in the first place.

Here is a good tip. Many of have seen popup ads where it has a button and says click on this to close the advertisement. Don't click that button because it may be associated with installing spyware on computer. Press the "X" to close out the window instead. That will force a hard close of the window without running any spyware installers.

Never under any circumstances open an email attachment from someone that you do not know. If you don't know what kind of attachment you are opening for sure then don't open it. It may contain something to install a virus or spyware on your computer.

Most of us are guilty of not reading all agreements when we install software. We usually just click the Accept button and move on with the install. Makers of spyware software know this too and they actually put clauses in the agreement that by clicking the Accept button you agree to install their spyware. This can be annoying and time-consuming but it would be wise to read all agreements of any software you install.

With today's high speed internet connections where you do not dial up and they are always on, you should never operate without a firewall on you computer. This firewall should also protect against your computer sending viruses or spyware from behind it to the rest of the world. Windows XP Service Pack 2 has a built in firewall. If you are using some version of Windows prior to XP, there are third party personal firewalls such as ZoneAlarm that are relatively inexpensive and have built in antivirus and anti-spyware protection.

And lastly, make sure your Internet Explorer security settings are set at medium or higher. If they are not set at least at this level you can pick up spyware by just visiting a web site. In fact, if you want better protection against spyware, download and install Mozilla Firefox and make it your default web browser. It has much better protection against these threats.

Why Spyware is so Dangerous

We have all heard of malicious virus and worm programs that infect our computers and cause all kinds of problems when they delete files or begin mass-mailing the virus to everyone in our email address book. But there is a more subtle sort of undesirable software that comes in through the Internet known as spyware. Spyware is software that gets installed on your computer without your knowledge and sometimes is designed to record what you type on the keyboard and send to others. What makes spyware so dangerous is that it likes to collect personal information to include credit card numbers and passwords and send them elsewhere. The most dangerous spyware is of the type that records your keystrokes and sends the information to the interested parties. Think about it. If you use the Internet to pay bills, do banking, purchase items, or look up personal information then you will inevitably use keystrokes to direct the processes. You will use keystrokes to enter credit cards, passwords, birth dates, social security numbers and many more important data items that uniquely identify you as the owner of that information.

Now no one would put software on their computer if they knew it would steal their personal information and the makers of spyware know this and came up with a solution. Another characteristic that makes spyware so dangerous is the fact that it usually installs without the knowledge of the user. How does it do this? It usually gets installed as part of an installation of desirable software you are aware of installing. In other words, the spyware piggybacks off of a software product you willingly put on your system. Viruses can install spyware also.

There are many other characteristics of spyware that add to its danger. Some spyware opens remote access to a stranger to your computer. A stranger can actually control your computer from some other location and you would never know who. There is an especially dangerous sort of spyware known as a bot. Bots, once installed on your system, can be controlled via the Internet Relay Chat protocol or channel and can do things like start emailing viruses and spam to other users when it collects all email addresses found on your computer. Then the email recipient multiplies the problem when the same bot installs on the target computer and starts emailing spam and viruses as well. If you have virus protection that checks outgoing emails. This can get especially irritating if you have a bot on your system as the virus scanner will catch every outgoing mail with this virus and drag your system down in terms of performance. It is a good thing however if your antivirus software does catch it instead of allowing it to be spread.

Another characteristic of spyware that makes it so dangerous is the fact that it can significantly degrade the performance of your computer. All of that activity engaged in by the spyware program utilizes the resources of your computer. Just having a piece of software that is engaged in creating popup ads heavily consumes computer resources. Plus, these spyware programs are not models of high-performance software. These programs are typically written by hackers who have little or no knowledge of sound software design principles and can create software that performs very poorly by consuming too many system resources.

And to sum it up, spyware is an absolute nuisance. It just makes a computing experience dreadful. Get yourself some good tools to protect against it.

Prevent Spyware in 3 Easy Steps

The Internet is a great benefit to all of us, but when spyware slows your computer down to a snail's pace, it becomes impossible to access. Spyware, the malicious programs that infiltrate your computer to keep track of what you've been doing online, can be stopped if you take precautions. Here are three easy steps to keep spyware from infecting your computer.

1. Keep all your software programs updated. Make sure you quickly take care of updating them whenever you get that notice on your screen that a new version is available. This is important because spyware programmers find ways to get their programs into the older versions. The new versions have not been studied yet, so there is more chance of spyware getting in through an older version.

If you have Windows programs, such as Windows Media Player, you will periodically receive a notice in the form of a pop-up when you use your program. The notice will say something like "updates now available" or "new version available." It's a good idea to take a moment right then to update these programs. It seems like something of a hassle, perhaps, but it is necessary for keeping your computer safe from spyware.

2. Adjust your web browser for security. Most spyware is designed to work through the most popular of web browsers, Internet Explorer. Sometimes just using a different browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, can make a difference in the amount of spyware you pick up. If you like all the features of Internet Explorer and prefer to use it, you need to make sure the security settings are set properly.

To check your security settings in Internet Explorer, go to the tool bar and click on the word "Tools." Now choose the tab that says "Security." You will have a choice of default or custom settings. Unless you know exactly how you want to adjust custom settings, click on "default." This will give you a choice of settings from low to high and should be set at least on "medium." The higher you set it, the less freedom it will give you in surfing the web, but it will give you more protection from spyware at the same time.

3. Install a firewall and an anti-spyware program. Often you can find these as free downloads. Anti-spyware protection should be part of your anti-virus program. Make sure, if you get these as free downloads, that you get them from a reputable site. Sometimes spyware comes in on the back of a so-called anti-spyware program from a little known provider. For the safest choice, pay for these programs and again, use a reputable brand.

A firewall is a type of security program that keeps hackers out of your computer. It also blocks worms and viruses. If you use Windows, you probably have a firewall on your computer already. It should be set to "on." To make sure about this, go into "all programs" on your start button. In Windows XP, go to "accessories," then choose "system tools," Here, you should have "security center" as one of your choices. Click on it and you will see whether your firewall is turned on.

Hopefully these three tips will help you keep spyware off your computer.

Is Spyware Killing Your Computer?

If you've been on the internet for any length of time, you've probably heard of spyware and how damaging it can be to your computer. Just what is spyware, anyway? And is there any chance that it could be killing your computer?
Spyware is, by definition, malicious software which unscrupulous people use in order to take control of someone else's computer without their consent. The perpetrators of spyware use the information they glean from your computer for their own benefit and purposes. Usually, spyware keeps track of what you are doing with your computer, sends the information to ad websites, who in turn blast you with pop-ups more or less suited to your interests.

Some spyware programs, however, are designed for the purpose of stealing your identity. There are even programs called "anti-spyware" which are really just pretending to be helpful. They are in reality causing problems. Downloads, such as toolbars, are a prime source of spyware, so always be careful about such freebies. Also, be careful if you use Internet Explorer as your web browser, because more spyware is targeted at it than at other web browsers.

If your computer has become infected with spyware, you will probably have problems with your computer's performance. It can cause the computer to operate more slowly, or even cause a system crash. It can also cause you to have trouble making your connection to the Internet.

Spyware usually doesn't show up as a single program on your computer. More commonly, you will have many spyware programs if you have one. The effect of these unwanted programs usually becomes visible when your computer becomes much slower. Some of the spyware programs cause your firewall or anti-virus programs to stop working. In fact, sometimes one spyware program will disable another!

One reason that spyware slows down your computer is that it takes up the available disk space the computer would normally use in opening and running programs. Spyware is also designed to intertwine into your other programs so that it is difficult to remove.

Spyware also negatively affects the performance of your web browser so that you are bombarded with advertisements when you simply want to browse. Spyware can cause the settings of your web browser to change, and it can cause unwanted toolbars to appear on your computer.

Fortunately, there are legitimate and effective anti-spyware programs available for your computer. To be on the safe side, you should use such a program that is produced by one of the major creators of anti-virus software, firewalls, and the like. A couple of reliable companies are McAffee and AVG. Be suspicious of pop-up ads for free anti-spyware programs, because these are likely to actually be spyware.

A final comment about anti-spyware programs is that they, like anti-virus and other security programs, require you to make frequent updates. These can seem like a nuisance, but they are essential to keeping things operating smoothly. Considering the millions of people who are using the Internet at any time, it's easy to see why updates would have to be made often.

5 Simple Steps To Stamp Our Spyware

Spyware is pervasive and if you are connected to the internet then you are bound to have spyware on your computer. Having spyware residing inside your computer is akin to having unwanted strangers living in your house. Because you don't know them, you also don't know what harm and destructiveness they can get up to. Most of the time spyware can just be a real pain but at it's worst it can be a real privacy risk and can result in financial loss.

So if your someone that absolutely detests some stranger seeing what you are doing online, stealing your private information possibly for financial gain or messing with your computer making it slow and prone to crashing then it's time to fight back.

Here are 5 simple steps to stamp out spyware from your computer.

1. Download software from a reputable source. The most common way for spyware to sneak into your computer is from free software or peer-to-peer networks. If you really want to get your hands on some useful free software the best source is to go to download.com which has a no spyware policy. Be wary of any software that offers to download additional programs that you did not originally want.

2. Don't just download any anti-spyware software. Spyware creators have caught onto the fact that they are unwanted so they have craftily started creating so called spyware removal software to help you get rid of the very spyware they created. Don't be fooled, stick to credible spyware removers which are going to actually do the job of removing spyware from your computer.

3. Avoid dodgy websites that can potentially install spyware on your computer. Some dodgy sites use spyware as a way to supplement their income and it can result in harmful spyware being installed onto your computer. The most common dodgy sites are porn or gambling sites which can hijack your computer or annoy you with persistent spyware initiated advertising on your screen.

4. Have an up to date spyware removal software installed on your computer. Spyware like viruses are constantly being created and you therefore need to keep your spyware removal software up to date by utilizing their update feature. You need to be running your spyware removal software on a regular basis otherwise there isn't any point having it there just sitting on your computer. You will find that with some spyware you can clean your computer from them one day and they'll be there again the next.

5. Don't just rely on your anti-virus software. If you have an anti virus software already installed in your computer then that's great but don't expect it to also protect you from spyware. While many anti virus software these days also detect spyware you really need a designated software to protect you from spyware.

Protect Your Computer

I will have to be first when I admit I am addicted to the Internet. Whenever I‘ve got a spare hour, I love to just surf around as a form of entertainment. I have also found out about the world of download. I can take the best in modern music and DVD and watch or listen as I do whatever else I want. This is the kind of thing that absolutely anyone could become addicted to. Whatever entertainment you want for the cost of your Internet connection! Wow. As perhaps you would expect, when I am online all the time I run into a few problems that I have had to deal with. When downloading, you are simply asking for problems when these files are not being scanned before you actually download them. I lost all information from my hard disk before, and that includes my financial records, my photographs and the all the games, and DVDs and music which I had downloaded along the way.

Before, I just had some anti-virus software called Norton which was just on my computer when I bought it. I thought it worked fine but occasionally some viruses would get through. Yes only occasionally, but this is not good enough when your computer could just crash at any given time. This is a problem that you have to tackle before some malware or spyware penetrates your hard drive or the internals of your computer. My friend's PC just started switching off whenever it pleased as a result of this and the same thing could easily happen to you.

So basically what I would recommend is that you do not surf the Internet, then your current protection will probably be ok. However if you do, then you absolutely have to upgrade your virus package.

So now I don’t rely on any rubbish package for anti-virus protection. You simply have to update your as well if you want to protect your computer. Because the Internet changes every minute, so does the viruses that your anti-virus software has to tackle. That is why you need software which automatically updates itself via your Internet connection. Think about when a new virus pops-along. Will your two-year old package be able to defend your computer? I do not think so some how.

And other thing that you need from anti-virus software is something that will come with support functionality. Imagine when you realize that you have zero idea how to upload your software. You need a call-center that is going to ensure you can get it working on your computer. You should actually get software which directly meets your surfing habits. If you do not then you are just asking for problems to happen. Look at the software and ask questions. Will this be able to handle downloading from peer-to-peer networks?

Basically, if you spend your time online or even if you work from the Internet then you cannot afford not to invest in some quality anti-virus protection. Having some rubbish package is better than nothing, however things are far more sophisticated these days, and you really need something that is going to work. It is a wise investment, and think how much money you will save once you start downloading free stuff online?

Stop Spam With Disposable Email Addresses

Spam is an unnecessary evil that bugs anyone with a computer. Yet there are many ways available today by which you can avoid being “bugged” by spam, which has the potential to completely destroy your data and your computer. The oft-used methods are filters, blockers and other programs which almost all e mail service provider can offer. You may now go for another very innovative way to avoid spam. It is called “disposable e mails”. The basic methodology by which these disposable e mail addresses work, is that after it receives a certain amount of spam messages, it automatically destructs itself. It might set you wondering whether this means that you have to keep on changing your e mail addresses all the time. This is where the disposable e mail address add value. After you opt for a disposable e mail address, you are given one with a specific user name. your address depends on the user name.

You will then give your e mail service provider some keywords, which enables the provider to send you mails only from those sources you approve of. These keywords are based on their names or whatever you choose. So when you give your e mail address to someone from whom you like to receive mails, it will contain those keywords in the address, so as to allow them to enter your inbox. All other mails reach your other e mail address which goes through constant change for you to view them. If you ignore them for some time, they get automatically deleted.

This unique e mail , though keeps on changing, you can access it through your user name and password. By using this tool, you can always ignore the spams and not worry about them again. Of all the methods available, which wages a war against spam, this happens to be my favorite. This service of course dos not come free but it costs the same amount of money s you would be spending for your paid e mail services from the ISP. Since it saves you the worry of constantly worrying whether your computer is gong to crash because of spam, and you don’t have to spend endless hours sifting through the junk mail, I feel this is a cost worth incurring.
